Total Return Calculator With Dividends
Total return combines capital appreciation and cash distributions. Annualization makes different holding periods comparable but smooths over volatility.
Price return alone misses cash dividends and distributions. This calculator measures dollar gain, total return, and annualized return using the beginning value, ending value, distributions received, fees paid, and holding period. It does not assume dividends were reinvested unless their value is already reflected in the ending balance.
How this total return calculator with dividends works
The model adds distributions to the ending value, subtracts fees and the initial value, and divides the net gain by the initial investment. It then converts the ending multiple into a compound annual rate.
Formula
Total return = (ending value + distributions − fees − starting value) ÷ starting value
External cash flows and reinvested dividends require time-weighted or money-weighted return methods. This simplified calculator is best for a single uninterrupted holding.
Primary specifications
Before you use the result
Assumptions
- • All cash distributions belong to the measured holding period.
- • The ending value and fees are measured consistently.
- • Taxes and interim deposits or withdrawals are excluded.
Quick start
- 1. Enter the position value at the beginning and end.
- 2. Add dividends or other cash distributions and subtract costs.
- 3. Use the annualized result only when comparing equal cash-flow conventions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between price return and total return?
Price return measures only the change in market value. Total return also includes dividends and other distributions.
Are reinvested dividends double-counted?
They can be. If the ending value already includes reinvested distributions, do not add the same dividends again.
Why annualize the return?
Annualization converts different holding periods into comparable compounded yearly rates, but it hides the volatility experienced along the way.
